Sadness is a normal part of life. However, if sadness and feeling down lasts longer than a few days then you may be dealing with depression (Ontario CMHA). You may notice that:
- Feelings of overwhelming sadness have started to keep you from the things that matter.
- The things that you used to provide you joy now seem uninteresting.
- Feelings of hopelessness and helplessness.
- Feeling guilty
- Low energy and motivation
- Irritability or anger
- Changes to appetite (e.g. sudden decrease or increase)
- Changes to sleep quality (e.g. sleeping less, sleeping more, broken sleep)
- Thoughts about how things are pointless.
- Thoughts about suicide or death.
Having some of these symptoms may be an indicator that you are dealing with depression.
Finding Relief from Depression
Depression affects about 1 in 4 Canadians (Ontario Ministry of Health). It may come once or a few times in a person’s life. For some, it is a lifelong issue. However, depression can be managed. Through therapy, you may be able to gain insight into your depression and learn ways to manage it.
In therapy, we may use:
- Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) to help us notice how our situation, thoughts, actions, and feelings are interconnected. CBT helps us how to identify negative thoughts and replace them with more constructive thoughts or behaviours
- Solution-focused therapy (SFT/SFBT) focuses on identifying personal strengths, setting realistic and helpful goals, and striving to towards them.
